Why is the introduction so important?
The introduction is the first word the reader will read from your article—it determines whether your readers stay or leave.
It’s even more crucial on Medium because you earn from reads, and to get a read, you have to hook for at least 30 seconds.
A great introduction doesn’t just grab attention; it creates a sense of curiosity and promises value, compelling the reader to continue.
Many writers don’t know how to write a good introduction, and they don’t even think it’s important. I know this because I was in the same situation one year ago.
And it cost me a lot of wasted potential.
So, here’s how to write good introductions and hook your reader.

Step 1: Start With a Captivating Hook
The opening sentence sets the tone and grabs attention. It should hit home for the reader or intrigue him right from the start. There are a few ways to make a hook :
- Ask a Question:
The goal is to build a connection with the person who reads your article. If you ask something that you 100% know the reader has, for example, a problem. After reading your question, he’ll probably think: I’ve got this problem, and it s*cks.
Then, you announce to him that you had the same problem. “Had” is the keyword, you don’t have this problem anymore = you solved it.
You reminded the reader that he had this problem and positioned yourself as the person who solved it. Now, he’s hooked and will read further.
